The perception that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani unfailingly supports Israel is beginning to show cracks as his business dealings come to light, putting him in the same category as McCain and Romney who have made statements that caused others to question their support of the Jewish community and Israel.
On May 15, 2007, CBS and AP both published stories that his firm, Bracewell & Giuliani lobbied for the Saudi government, Saudi oll industry and represented Saudi Arabia in several court cases in the United States.
"This is the first time I am aware of a Republican candidate taking money to advocate on behalf of an enemy of Israel," said Democrats for Israel president Andrew Lachman.
More recently, further investigation shows that Giuliani also represented Citgo, which is owned in part by the Venezuelan government, headed by Hugo Chavez, who has expanded its relationship with Iran and terrorized Jewish citizens in Venezuela.
The other candidates don't fare much better.
Former Governor Mitt Romney remains the only major Mormon leader who has mot spoken out against attempts by a small group of Latter-Day Saints Church members who attempted to "posthumously" baptize Jewish Holocaust victims. As governor of Massachusetts, he also vetoed bills that would reimburse state Medicare providers for the cost of providing Kosher means to patients.
Senator John McCain appointed James Baker ally Admiral Brent Scrowcroft to head his foreign policy team and recently was quoted in a Beliefnet interview, stating that America is a "Christian Nation."
