Democrats for Israel Los Angeles deeply appreciates how yesterday (7/15/2026) Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA 32) showed exactly what principled Democratic leadership looks like. As one of only three Democrats to take the House floor and speak against the Massie Amendment, which sought to strip $3.3 billion in annual military aid to America's most reliable ally in the Middle East, Sherman stood firm while his party fractured around him.

He rightly called out House Republicans for pushing this vote to drive a wedge between Democrats during an election year, but he didn't hide behind process, he made the substantive case for why the U.S.-Israel alliance serves America's national security, strengthens our defense industrial base, and keeps both nations safer.

The final vote was sobering: while the amendment was defeated 314-104 thanks to near-unanimous Republican opposition (215 against, with Massie the sole GOP vote in favor), 103 Democrats voted to gut aid to Israel (including 8 from Los Angeles County, and yet another who simply voted ‘present’) while only 98 voted against and 10 voted present. That a slim majority of voting Democrats chose to abandon a decades-long bipartisan commitment to Israel's security should alarm anyone who cares about the future of the Democratic Party and the U.S.-Israel relationship.

Congressman Sherman has pledged to continue fighting to convince his Democratic colleagues that the Democratic Party should remain a pro-Israel party, and that fight has never been more important.
